BARCELONA CHURCHES

We have devoted a web page solely to the Sagrada Familia and deservedly so but there are many other historic buildings and churches worthy of a stop and look. There are plenty of smaller churches you will discover by accident if you just wander around but here are two that are worth hunting down to spend some time in.
La Catedral de Barcelona (Cathedral of Barcelona) is one of the city’s largest tourist attractions and stands majestically in the Gothic Quarter. The cathedral’s exterior is certainly matched in beauty by its interior, because of the long period of 150 years worth of construction, three different periods of architecture are visible. Keep an eye out for the crypt of Saint Eulalia, a martyr to the Christian faith, who gives the Cathedral another name by which it is sometimes called – the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia. Free entrance in the morning when surprisingly there seems to be less people as well! Basílica de Santa María del Mar was constructed in the 14th century over 54 years and is among the most beautiful churches in Barcelona. It is a prime example of the typical Catalan Gothic style, boasting impressive architecture, harmonious in its simple symmetry. Beautiful stain glassed windows let in the sunlight, providing a surprisingly open and light area, a great contrast to the seemingly stern exterior. Santa María del Mar is a peaceful oasis in the midst of a tremendously busy city and is most definitely worth a visit. |
