After 5 weeks in Kuala Lumpur we had decided that we needed to get away and go elsewhere for a while. Not that we didn't like KL it was just we needed a change of scene. A friend of ours was moving to London for a year or so and was going to have a few days stopover in Barcelona and as we managed to find a good deal on Skyscanner with Emirates we thought.....what the...... let's go!
An overnight stop in Dubai to break the journey and as we had spent a while in Dubai a year or so ago just opted to spend the night in the airport hotel...see here. Barcelona's El Prat international airport is about 14 Klm's from the CBD of Barcelona and as we had arrived latish in the day we chose to take a taxi to our hotel which was right on Las Ramblas and cost us around 25 Euros. There are plentiful other options and on our return we used the Aerobus which was much cheaper and just as fast. Spain’s second largest and definitely most cosmopolitan city, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia which is a region of Spain with its own language – Catalan. It definitely has it’s own culture and character which has been demonstrated loudly and clearly just recently in response to the politicians of Madrid seeming to want to take their autonomy away. There are two legends that surround the history of Barcelona, one attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules, 400 years before Rome. The second attributes the founding of the city in the 3rd century BC to the Carthaginian ruler Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal the Great. Barcelona is a dynamic, Mediterranean city, perfect to relax, stroll around and enjoy its unique way of life. It offers so much to the visitor, there is so much to see, something new and interesting awaits around every corner: The architecture, the famous Las Ramblas avenue, Gaudi’s Guel Parc and the unfinished La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Cathedral, the old Gothic quarter where you can lose yourself in the twists and turns of the maze of narrow streets. Find some fantastic local restaurants and tapas and pintxos bars away from the typical tourist area. Getting around Barcelona is easy, you can pretty much walk around the whole city. |
