Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur are diverse, to say the least, ranging from all-day hawker centres, food courts, and quaint coffee shops to fine-dining restaurants. As a melting pot of vibrant Asian cultures and traditions, Kuala Lumpur is famous for its wide array of tantalising local delicacies such as nasi lemak, but Kuala Lumpur restaurants also cater to travellers and expats who crave something familiar, where international eateries are available in abundance, particularly in the KL city centre.
A nation, where up to six meals a day is not uncommon and although Malays don't eat pork, Indians refuse beef and some Chinese are strict vegetarians, food seems to unite people here, it is almost impossible to not eat well in KL. Most large shopping malls and office blocks will have a basement food court where very cheap, safe food can be bought to eat there or take-away. Be sure to get there well before lunch time though if you want any chance of getting a seat. To fully immerse yourself in the Malaysian food culture a visit to Jalan Alor is mandatory. The hum of this long street can be heard from a distance, this is the most popular destination for foodies in the Golden Triangle area of Kuala Lumpur. Drooling foodies led by tantalising aromas stroll by food stalls full of spicy delights, pull up a blue or red plastic chair and order away. The food stalls here serve mostly Chinese food, but there is a great deal of variety. For local Malay delicacies continue to the Kampung Baru district. It is a lot quieter than Jalan Alor with fewer tourists and draws mainly locals. This friendly village-like enclave only a stones throw from the Twin Towers is home to a large community of Malay senior citizens. Experience the friendly small-town ambiance early in the morning when people flock here to savour some nasi lemak, one of the best in Kuala Lumpur. This rice dish with peanuts, cucumber, dried anchovies, boiled egg and a "fiery" sambal is the national breakfast dish, but tastes great any time of the day. Is it any wonder we had a battle to lose any weight while we were here!! |
