SINGAPORE SIGHTS
|
The Art Science Museum is a magnificently designed building where we spent over an hour seeing the various displays inside which I would rate as very good, not great but worth the time and the $17 SGD. The unique design resembles two hands held palms upwards with the fingers jutting towards the sky with each fingertip having a skylight which is used to illuminate the interior. Exhibitions rotate so be sure to check their website to see what’s on before you visit.
A visit to Singapore is not complete with visiting the Merlion fountain from where you get a good view of MBS. Half-lion, half-fish, the Merlion is the emblem of Singapore and not a mythical creature from some bygone legend but was dreamed up by the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964. The fish body represents Singapore’s long history as a port and the lion head is a reference to the city’s name – Singa Pura (Lion City). Although falling into the same class of tackiness as having a pic of yourself holding up the tower in Pisa setting yourself up to appear as if the water is pouring into your mouth it is still very Instagram worthy. The Supertree Grove is quite outstanding but unfortunately had its Skyway access closed for maintenance while we were there which happens every so often so check out their website in case you're like us. Measuring between 25 and 50 metres tall, these iconic tree-like vertical gardens are designed with large canopies that provide shade during the day and come alive with a mesmerising display of light and sound at night. Free entry and open from 5:00 AM until 2:00 AM. There is also the Cloud Forest within the same area which is a huge climate controlled green house on a grand scale which is well worth the visit. We can't say by any stretch of the imagination that we did justice to the sights available in Singapore as we only had a couple of days and spent one of them soaking up the luxury of the Marina Bay Sands. At our own expense I might add! There is plenty to keep most people amused for quite some days although compared to the rest of SE Asia it is more expensive but everything is of a quality that probably justifies the price. As the cut price wing of Singapore Airlines, Scoot, is now flying non-stop to Athens at a very reasonable price I can see us passing through Singapore a number of times in the future so the opportunity to explore further no doubt will be coming soon. |
